The premise was good, the main characters were engaging and interesting. BUT.... Confusing it was, and totally unnecessary for the use of this particular speech pattern for a character. All I could hear in my head was Yoda, which was distracting to say the least. I also understand the need for subplots, but there were games within games and none of them sufficiently fleshed out to give the book a robust flavor. I like Will Shetterly but I think he got way too clever on this one, losing his path and this old lady along the way. He does more justice to short stories and his Borderland forays (Elsewhere and NeverNever) are outstanding. A usually good author, a mediocre book.

I read this in paper years ago and loved it. It's still fun but the Kindle copy appears to be missing or have truncated certain parts. Either that or my memory is gone. One classic scene is altered so you miss the punchline.

I love all the characters and would like to enter this world and have a walk around. I've read this book over many times.
